Early Life
He was born on 15 October 1949 in Calcutta, West Bengal. His father’s name was P.L. Roy aka Hurricane Roy, he was an executive in a multinational company. Prannoy’s grandfather name from his father’s side was Paresh Lal Roy; he was also called “father of Indian boxing”. He popularized that game in India. Boxing was not as famous but after his grandfather collected various awards in the boxing category. That game also became a favourite of every household. When Prannoy was in his childhood he was a high tempered boy so his grandfather called him Tempest.

His wife’s name is Radhika Roy; she is co-founder and executive co-chairperson on NDTV. From 1998 to 2011, she was the managing director of the company. NDTV became the first independent news broadcaster to proceed in India. She started her career as a journalist for India Today and The Indian Express. This channel was in a 5 year partnership with Star India, so it launched a 24×7 independent channel of news. It was a big success for that channel. In 2003 this borrowing broke down and the company launched its channels like NDTV India and NDTV 24X7. At that time it became the leading company of India in the news sector.

The founder of NDTV resigned from the position of director because billionaire Gautam Adani took control of 67.71% of the company. Along with them four other directors also resigned from the company. He held only 2.5% equity shares in the company. Adani stated that we wanted an international standard applied in the organization with new talent appointed which will help it to global level news companies.
