Pawan Kalyan, born Konidela Kalyan Babu, has built a career that extends well beyond Telugu cinema. After entering films in the 1990s, he became known for a distinctive screen presence and a string of popular films, while maintaining an image that was somewhat different from the conventional mainstream hero.

His career took another direction in 2014, when he founded the Jana Sena Party and entered electoral politics. After a decade that included both political setbacks and organisational work, he contested the 2024 Andhra Pradesh Assembly election from Pithapuram and won the seat. Jana Sena Party candidates also won all 21 Assembly constituencies the party contested that year.

Today, Pawan Kalyan holds constitutional office as the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, while continuing to remain connected with Telugu cinema. His career therefore spans three distinct areas—acting, political organisation and government administration.

Early Life and Entry into Telugu Cinema

Pawan Kalyan was born on 2 September 1971 in what is now Andhra Pradesh. His birth name is Konidela Kalyan Babu. He is the younger brother of actors Chiranjeevi and Nagendra Babu, and comes from a family with a significant presence in Telugu cinema.

Unlike an actor who follows a long-established film-school or theatre route, Pawan Kalyan entered cinema in the mid-1990s. His first film, Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi, was released in 1996.

His early work gradually established a screen identity built around youthful characters, action-oriented roles and romantic dramas. Films such as Gokulamlo Seetha, Suswagatham and Tholi Prema helped him develop a following among younger Telugu audiences.

Tholi Prema, released in 1998, became one of the important films of this phase of his career and remains one of the titles most closely associated with his early years in cinema.

Films That Shaped His Screen Image

The early 2000s expanded Pawan Kalyan’s position in Telugu cinema. Thammudu, Badri and Kushi gave him a succession of commercially recognised roles and helped establish the screen persona for which he became known.

Later films added different shades to that image. Jalsa (2008), Gabbar Singh (2012) and Attarintiki Daredi (2013) became particularly notable entries in his filmography. Gabbar Singh and Attarintiki Daredi were also among the commercially successful films of his acting career.

His work has not been limited to acting. Pawan Kalyan has also received credits as a writer, director, producer and in other filmmaking roles. His filmography includes projects across several genres, although action, drama and commercial entertainment have remained recurring elements.

There was also a long gap between some of his major releases. After Agnyaathavaasi in 2018, he returned to the screen with Vakeel Saab in 2021. That was followed by Bheemla Nayak in 2022 and Bro in 2023.

From Cinema to Jana Sena

Pawan Kalyan’s move into politics became a defining second chapter of his public career.

In 2014, he founded the Jana Sena Party. Rather than immediately contesting elections as a candidate, he initially focused on political campaigning and public outreach. He supported the Telugu Desam Party and Bharatiya Janata Party alliance during the 2014 election period, while Jana Sena itself was not then contesting the Assembly election.

The party’s electoral journey became more direct in the following years. In the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Assembly election, Pawan Kalyan contested from Gajuwaka and Bhimavaram but did not win either seat.

The 2024 election marked a significant change in the party’s electoral record. Pawan Kalyan contested from Pithapuram and won the constituency. Jana Sena also secured victories in all 21 Assembly constituencies it contested. These results brought the party into the state government as part of the alliance led by the Telugu Desam Party.

Pawan Kalyan in Andhra Pradesh Government

Following the 2024 Assembly election, Pawan Kalyan became Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

His ministerial responsibilities have included Panchayati Raj, Rural Development and Rural Water Supply, along with Environment, Forests and Science & Technology. These portfolios place his work across local governance, rural development, water supply and environmental administration. Current Andhra Pradesh government department websites continue to list him in these roles.

The transition from actor and party founder to a constitutional office-holder has also changed the nature of his public responsibilities. His role now involves government departments, administrative decisions and implementation of state programmes rather than electoral campaigning alone.

For a public figure whose career was built largely in cinema, this phase represents a different kind of professional responsibility. Its significance can be assessed through government work and policy outcomes over time rather than through celebrity status.

Cinema Alongside Public Office

Pawan Kalyan has not completely stepped away from acting after entering government.

His recent filmography includes Vakeel Saab (2021), Bheemla Nayak (2022), Bro (2023), Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1 – Sword vs Spirit (2025), They Call Him OG (2025) and Ustaad Bhagat Singh (2026).

This continued connection with cinema is unusual in the context of his current constitutional responsibilities. His recent film releases also show that his acting career has remained active alongside his political and governmental work.

As of 2026, his filmography continues to include projects associated with directors and production houses from the Telugu film industry, while his political career remains centred on his responsibilities in Andhra Pradesh.

Personal Life and Public Image

Pawan Kalyan’s personal life has received substantial media attention over the years. He has been married multiple times, including to actress and filmmaker Renu Desai, with whom he has two children, Akira Nandan and Aadhya. Public sources also document his later marriage to Anna Lezhneva.

Beyond his films and political position, his public image has been shaped by his interests outside mainstream cinema, including martial arts and reading. However, much of the discussion surrounding his personality comes from interviews, media coverage and fan culture, so it is useful to distinguish documented details from interpretations of his character.

What remains clear is that his public career has moved through several distinct phases: actor, filmmaker, political party founder, election candidate and government office-holder. Each phase has added a different dimension to how he is known publicly.

Pawan Kalyan Today

Pawan Kalyan’s current career sits at the intersection of entertainment and politics. He remains a recognised figure in Telugu cinema while serving as Andhra Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister and handling multiple government portfolios.

His political journey has also gone through very different stages—from founding Jana Sena in 2014 and facing electoral setbacks in 2019 to winning from Pithapuram and leading his party into government after the 2024 election.

Meanwhile, his association with films has continued, with Ustaad Bhagat Singh among his 2026 releases.

For WikiMug, his story is best understood not as a simple transition from actor to politician, but as an evolving public career in which cinema, party politics and government administration now exist alongside one another.
